WARNING: The European Union and consequently the UK previously
imposed sanctions on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the
Republic of Serbia, which included a freezing of funds and a ban
on investment. The prohibition expressly stated: "No
funds shall be made available, directly or indirectly, to or for
the benefit of, either or both, those Governments." (EC Council Regulation No.1294/1999). Payments
to the Federal Intellectual Property Office were therefore banned
for the duration of the sanctions. Since the Autumn 2000 elections
resulted in the displacement of former President Milosevic, EC
Council Regulation No.1294/1999 has been repealed and replaced
by a less restrictive sanctions regime under Council Regulation (EC) No 2488/2000 (amended by Commission
Regulation (EC) No 1205/2001 of 19 June 2001) and Council Common Position 2000/599/CFSP. The position on payments to the Federal Intellectual
Property Office may consequently have changed. However, interested
parties must undertake their own inquiries to confirm the position
in their own jurisdiction. Further details on UK sanctions are
available from the DTI
Export Control Organisation,
who can be contacted for
specific advice.
